"When in Rome, do as the Romans do" - and this is certainly true for Berlin as well, if you really wish to become acquainted with this city. Consequently during your private Berlin tours, we will board the exciting system of Berlin public transportation and observe Berlin life from there when we commence our tour. It really is the best way to explore the city, learn about its people - and to pick up the Berlin vibe. And if offers great insights while we are under way.
Berlin covers an area of roughly 890 square kilometers (N.Y.C. has about 820 square kilometers), of which almost 43 % are forests and lake areas. Berlin is about nine times the size of Paris. But just like N.Y.C. in 1910, in 1920 Berlin was composed of numerous cities, villages, etc. around a dominating center. Because of this, Berlin in all its parts is perfect and accessible for leisure private walking tours - a city being vast and small at the same time. So "being a Berliner in Berlin" may sometimes mean to "underdress," depending on the area you would like to explore with me. PLEASE NOTE: This does NOT mean the area is unsafe: Berlin is one of the safest cities in the world, but to "underdress" is simply Berlin style. International fashion scouts just love it! This is true for all but the most touristy areas.
If you have any wishes in regard to what to do or what to explore during your private Berlin tour - wonderful!
If you don't - that's fine, too. I can make suggestions
that will fit you and/or your party. We may even be able to listen to a visiting head of state or prime minister giving a speech at the German Council of Foreign Relations...
A remark about safety in Berlin
Having toured wide parts of the world, including parts of Russia Egypt and much of South America and the Carribean , I know how it can feel to be a traveler in a foreign environment - especially if you are a first-timer. Berlin, however, generally is a very safe place. There are NO no-go areas as in many other world capitals and/or big cities. This said, please pay attention to the frequently reckless driving style on the streets and - in some areas - to drunken youths, some of whom may very well be your fellow countrymen. The drinking laws and the policiy concerning drug abuse are VERY liberal in Berlin.
Due in part to the PR activities of our current Governing Mayor - flamboyant, openly gay and a friend of many Hollywood celebrities - Berlin has acquired a world-wide reputation as being the leading party capital (see above) - and yet, it has so many quiet and tranquil corners you would scarcely believe it.
